How trauma and Chronic Stress Can Show Up

How does trauma show up?

Not everything we experience is trauma and not everything is linked to trauma. Many of the patterns that people are struggling with have roots in how their nervous system responds to stressors, how dysregulated their nervous system currently is, past experiences, memories, and adaptations to stress.  When your nervous system is dysregulated or overwhelmed, it can show up as anxiety, burnout, depression, chronic stress, substance use, or feeling stuck.

Trauma

You’re not broken. Your body may be responding to more than your conscious mind can explain.

Not everything is trauma. Not everything is caused by your nervous system. And not every uncomfortable symptom needs to be turned into a deep psychological origin story.

But stress, trauma, medical experiences, relationships, life transitions, and ongoing overwhelm can affect how you think, feel, react, connect, shut down, and move through the world. Trauma is a whole-body experience; it’s not just your thoughts. It lives in your nervous system, manifesting as unexplainable triggers, a tight chest, or sudden, reactive behaviors that feel completely out of character. We may use approaches such as Brainspotting, EMDR, and DBR to explore distressing memories, body sensations, emotional reactions, and patterns connected to overwhelming experiences. No reliving the script, no endless talking, just focused, paced tools to help you drop the anchor and move forward.

Anxiety

Anxiety Isn’t Who You Are. It’s a Dysregulated Nervous System.

Racing thoughts. Tight chest. Overthinking everything at 2 a.m., assuming everyone is upset with you, rethinking every interaction—your body and nervous system are stuck in overdrive. This can be anxiety. It can also be stress, burnout, grief, medical concerns, depression, or several things piled on top of each other because apparently one problem was not enough.

We may work with body sensations, stress responses, and patterns connected to feeling constantly on guard, shut down, or overwhelmed. We will pay attention to what you notice and what feels useful—not force your body into a particular outcome.

Life Transitions

Sometimes life blows up the set list without asking permission.

Life transitions like divorce, loss, coming out, career collapse, becoming a parent, or walking away from everything you thought you wanted can throw your nervous system into overdrive or shut it down entirely. This creates feelings of anxiety, numbness, rage, and insomnia—which are all understandable reactions. In sessions, we address these feelings where they live: in your body, brain, and nervous system. We explore the survival patterns that have developed, allowing you to navigate through chaos without losing your sense of self.

Depression

Depression is not laziness. It can feel like the whole system has gone offline.

When getting out of bed feels impossible and everything feels heavy, your system may be stuck in collapse. This isn’t weakness; it’s a protective response. It might also be depression. We gently work with the brain and body to address where the body is holding this tension, exploring what may be contributing to the shutdown and what kinds of support, connection, and movement feel possible.

Addiction

Numbing makes sense. Until it doesn’t.

Substances can become a way to quiet anxiety, stop overthinking, escape memories, feel something, sleep, socialize, or take the edge off burnout.

That does not make every use harmless, and it does not mean shame is going to make anything better.

We can get curious about what the coping strategy is doing for you, what it costs you, and what you want your relationship with it to look like. Substance use may also require specialized assessment or support beyond this practice.

Stress

Your nervous system may be tired of being treated like it is supposed to run on emergency power forever.

If you are constantly on edge, overwhelmed, or exactly one minor inconvenience away from losing your mind, it may be worth paying attention to what your body has been carrying.

We are not going to throw breathing exercises at a life that is genuinely too much and call the problem solved. We can explore your stress responses, the conditions feeding them, and what other ways of responding may be available.

Medical Trauma and Chronic Illness

Your body changed the set list. It’s still your show.

Chronic illness and medical trauma don’t just hurt; they hijack your nervous system and change how you respond to stressors and perceived threats. One diagnosis, one ER visit, or one dismissive provider can change how the body responds to hypervigilance, exhaustion, or total collapse.

If your system feels fried, braced, dissociated, or betrayed, you’re not broken; your system is trying to adapt to the new normal.

Through somatic intensives, we can explore  how illness, medical experiences, uncertainty, and ongoing stress have affected your sense of safety and your responses to perceived threats. This work does not replace medical care, symptom evaluation, or crisis support

Who I work with

I work with ambitious, high-functioning adults, adolescents, and overwhelmed moms who are entirely done talking in circles. You’ve done the traditional talk therapy, you’ve read the self-help books, but you are still stuck in a perpetual state of burnout, irritability, and chronic fight-or-flight.

My clients are the people who are doing "all the right things" but still feel completely frozen, short-tempered, or constantly on edge.

This is for you if:

  • You want to start exploring your needs now with support.
  • You want to explore trauma, anxiety, and stress responses through active, body-based work.
  • You are a mom drowning in overstimulation: You love your kids fiercely, but by the end of the day, the noise, the clutter, and the constant demands leave your nervous system completely fried. You find yourself snapping, losing your temper, or utterly collapsing into numbness the second the house finally goes quiet because your body has simply run out of room to mask the stress.

If you’re feeling stuck and you are ready to explore your nervous system patterns in a deeper, raw, and unfiltered way, this is your couch.
