EMDR

What is EMDR?

How does EMDR Work?

How does EMDR Work?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a well known processing technique that allows your brain and nervous system to reprocess distressing memories and file them away so they no longer create fight or flight responses and allow calm.  We use traumatic memories, bilateral stimulation, detailed protocols and grounding to help process and resolve what is stuck and holding the nervous system hostage in the fight or flight state.  EMDR is an 8-phase model which is designed to build distress tolerance, integrate coping mechanisms into healing, and utilize visualizations and body feelings to allow your nervous system to detach from the trauma and understand that it is allowed to relax.

How does EMDR Work?

EMDR works by first exploring what is coming up daily that may be linked back to a distressing memory or traumatic experience.  We then apply the 8 phases to explore, build distress tolerance and prepare for reprocessing.  Once in the reprocessing phase we want to watch the preselected memory as if watching a movie while we engage in bilateral stimulation.  This process helps the brain and body work through the traumatic memory and calm the nervous system.
